just swinging by to say. . . [Feb. 9th, 2009|11:52 am]

. . . i was wrong. specifically, in this entry: tlr3.livejournal.com/4908.html in which i propose that donna's not in love with the doctor deal was a planned progression.

anyone who read the writer's tale knows that's nonsense. my opinion of RTD went both up and down as a result of that book. this is one of the down bits.

i'm never on here recently; i've been so busy i don't have time for much of anything. ever. *but* i have had time to be watching doctor who with my 4.5 year old. it was his idea. he loves it. old series and new series. (he says "i don't think there is a new series and old series. i think it is just doctor who.").

sorry for not keeping up with anyone at all ever. (in case any of you are still here. in case any of you liked being caught up with. i'm sorry. i'm so sorry.--btw, nine says sorry a lot too, have you noticed?)

journey's end [Jul. 8th, 2008|10:37 am]
[Tags|]

it bothers me, this finale.

on the one hand, i agree a lot with, for example, [info]parrotfish's "whimper" feelings about it and [info]astrogirl2's discontented thoughts about it overall.

then again, i have a niggling feeling that the finale turns the season and perhaps the series overall into the most thematically coherent season and the most coherent version of the series we've had so far--as expressed well by one of the guys over at behind the sofa.

so ambivalent. . .but i'm not ready to make much of it yet. . .

partners in crime is yay! [Apr. 5th, 2008|11:47 pm]
i'm so very very glad it didn't suck in all kinds of ways it could. and that stuff re: martha was right. and that donna is being pitched the way she is.

it would be nice for my general optimism to actually be rewarded by the *text* for once, and not just the subtext. maybe this will actually happen this season?

to summarize and conclude: partners in crime is yay! that is all.

i'm too stuck in rl to join the various discussions about the dw spoiler. *that* spoiler. you know. so i will just say that perhaps there's something wrong with me because i still believe RTD could turn it into something reasonable. and i say that as someone who just didn't buy the whole "unrequited love" thing and found the end of s3. . . underwhelming.

*shrugs*.

my post-doomsday fic: defending the earth [Oct. 6th, 2007|02:08 pm]
[Tags|]

in the "about a year too late" department, here is my post-doomsday fic. i've been mentioning it off and on ever since doomsday aired, at which point [info]drakyndra was politely encouraging about it on the OG. so it's her fault, naturally. or maybe it's [info]nostalgia_lj's fault seeing as how a number of the ideas popped into my head while reading or commenting on her lj posts. well, i hope i didn't steal anything from others, except of course for all of doctor who, for which there are spoilers up to doomsday, and which i do not own at all nor make any money from. it is without filth but hopefully at least slightly disturbing. i am just posting it to my regular journal in the hopes that someone will tell me if it is crap; then i can save myself the embarrassment of posting it somewhere that more people would read. comments regarding its level of crapness are most welcome.

doctor who season 1-4 as a re-introduction [Sep. 10th, 2007|09:09 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

ok, so i had an elaborate set of reasons for this, but my LJ ate them, so i'm just going to state the thesis and see if anyone who reads this without me crossposting it all over has anything to say about it. then maybe i'll say more and with evidence and such:

i think RTD thought the only way to have a dramatically-believable and audience-hooking companion for the doctor at the start was to have a quasi romance, but he always intended to back away from that and eventually reset to something more like the traditional doctor-companion relationship. and i think rose to martha to donna is that trajectory, and the shipwars on LJ are an unintended consequence of that policy.

who am i? who am i? etc. etc. xoanon-like. [Aug. 20th, 2007|08:30 pm]

it is [info]astrogirl2  's fault cleverosity for pointing out this blogalyzer thing. there be shock and horror below. a male, self-oriented verbose blogger? surely one could figure that out with my icon and a history of psychology textbook. . .

fan video waiting to happen [Aug. 11th, 2007|01:56 pm]
[Tags|, ]

someone should make a fan video of "the cap'm" by TMBG themed around captain jack. it won't be me because i have no skills.

"look me over, i'm the cap'm.
go ahead and mess with me.
you'll find out what will hap'm."

that is all.

total war in season three of doctor who, revisited [Jul. 7th, 2007|07:40 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]

quite a while back, i speculated (with spoilers) about the theme of total war in the third season of newdoctorwho.

the themes didn't play out quite the way i expected, so i thought i might revisit them.

in conclusion: the theme was still there, and i don't think it was entirely an accident. was it a successful part of the season? all the way up to the last episode, i'd say yes. i'm not so sure about the last one.

doctor who and the waste land [May. 6th, 2007|08:03 pm]

over on doctor who, the dramatic argument is being made that the only moral way to respond to a total war is by becoming ambivalent about your own survival at the cost of others.

wacked-out dr. who theory: chaplin and the doctor [Oct. 15th, 2006|02:03 pm]
[Tags|]

a local university held a chaplin film festival, and i went to all the showings. now my head rattles around with chaplin/doctor who relatedness:

then the little tramp's cane serves as his phallus, and nine and ten's sonic screwdriver is the doctor's. note that the sonic first showed up. . . with two. poor five. and no wonder six turned out so narcissistic.  . .

(no subject) [Sep. 9th, 2006|09:13 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

i just remembered that back when i had, you know, free time, i wrote a proposal for a doctor who novel. it was bonkers and kind of crap. i only wrote the synopsis and the one chapter, but you can get the drift. ETA: i removed the chapter because i'm gonna cannabalize it for parts, so you can't have it no more.

of course, it was rejected, and rightly so. some of the best parts, i found out later, had already been used in other novels. still, it's not such a bad thing to have accidentally almost come up with nearly the same idea as kate and jon or "mad larry."

anyway. i still think it's a little fun.

am watching. . . INFERNO!

so don't read if you don't want to know.

1. i have only watched one episode, but i am thrilled and relieved to learn that i don't simply hate pertwee entirely. compare and contrast this first episode to the claws of axos. good grief. did the uk have some kind of collective acting stroke/brain damage between the two stories?

2. also: it is apparently just asking for trouble to ride a bicycle through 70/80s (pick your unit dating) england. (compare and contrast INFERNO and claws, again.)

non-doctor who post [Aug. 25th, 2006|10:37 am]
i have posted to my blogspot account in reference to my bike-trek to a new railroad station near my house. not specifically of doctor who interest, but anyone interested in the way public transportation (fails) to work in the usa may find it somewhat interesting.

touching the satan pit void: the explication [Aug. 9th, 2006|08:11 am]
ok, so here's what i was thinking about the satan pit and touching the void.

i think the similarities start from the "lowering on a rope" sequence in both. the doctor and joe are both hanging "in a void," although of course this is stylized and extreme in TSP. the situation becomes untenable because there is not enough rope; the rope is cut. (in TTV, simon cuts joe's rope because if he doesn't they will both die; in TSP, the doctor cuts his own rope because it's the only way down.)

here's where things get mixed up a little: joe survives the fall, and through his own devices is again suspended in a "void," in this case, a bewildering crevasse. here, he undergoes a sort of existential crisis; similarly, the doctor undergoes a sort of existential crisis as he descends on the rope. in both cases there's a lot about "what's down there" and wondering how far down the pit/cravasse actually goes.

joe attempts to climb out and is unable to do so; he therefore decides he must go down (the doctor tries to go back up but is unable to do so; he decides he must go down). joe further decides that he will go to the bottom of the crevasse, whether he climbs down or falls; the doctor makes a similarly radical decision to cut his rope.

in both cases, the decision appears to be suicidal. in both cases, the decision ultimately leads to "everything working out."

similarly, there is another party that joe must count on: simon and the guy at base camp have to decide to stay (which makes no sense) in order for him to survive. similarly, the doctor is completely dependent on other people to take action (which, when you think it through, doesn't make a ton of sense, either) in order for things to work out.

there are quite a few shots of joe hanging by the rope that it seems to me someone must have thought about a little when doing TSP.

i think there's probably more, but i've got a toddler demanding attention. what do you think?

toucing the satan pit void [Aug. 6th, 2006|09:21 pm]
hypothesis: the satan pit is partially a pastiche of the movie _touching the void_.

i saw it this weekend and am totally convinced. in the incredibly unlikely event that anyone has seen both, please do back me up or shoot me down on this one.

look, two posts. yay!
